Qualifications to Drive for Uber
Starting off with the basics, it’s important to ensure that you already have or are willing to invest in the vehicle and personal requirements to become an Uber driver.
Minimum Driver Age
As an Uber driver, you must be 21 years of age or older and hold a valid driver’s license.
Becoming an Uber driver requires a number of documents in order to qualify and officially begin. When you’re ready to apply to become a driver, make sure you’ve collected the following:
- A valid driver's license
- Proof of work eligibility
- Social insurance number
- Proof of vehicle registration
- Proof of vehicle insurance
- A valid and clear driver profile photo
Sending the necessary documents to Uber can be done quite easily by either scanning or taking a very clear picture of your documents with your smartphone. From there, you can upload the necessary documents using the Uber app. You should hear back regarding your application within 10 days.
As part of Uber’s safety policies, every driver must complete a background check in order to begin driving. This background check must be completed through one of Uber’s Greenlight Hubs and will detail your history in terms of driving record and criminal history. This ensures that riders can trust their drivers.
Your Phone Requirements
You must have a smartphone, either Android or iOS, in order to efficiently and safely pick-up riders through the Uber app. This allows you to find the most profitable areas within the city, as well as use GPS to get your rider from point A to point B as quickly as possible.
Pro-tip: Since a portion of your smartphone and data use will be used for your work as an independent contractor, there may be an opportunity to claim a portion of your monthly bill as an expense under your business.
Other Personal Considerations
When exploring the idea of becoming an Uber driver, it’s important to consider your personality traits and work style and how they will help or hinder your ability to succeed as a driver. As an Uber driver, you will thrive most if you:
- Are able to hold a variety of conversations with strangers
- Are motivated and disciplined enough to hold a schedule that will help you bring in enough revenue and budget time for unpaid vacations.
- Are willing and capable of maintaining your business as an independent contractor, which includes basic business filings and accounting.
- Are able to comfortably and safely drive for at least 6 hours per day.

Hi, I’m Mike, Uber Driver and Website Creator
I’ve been driving with Uber for over four years now. And I’ve collected this data for your benefit, because I had the same questions when I first signed up with Uber — such as: how do I sign up for Uber, how do I get paid and how much can I make with Uber, and what are the Uber approved vehicles?
That’s why I am always working to provide accurate and objective information for you and keep you up to date with the latest Uber news.
